Day 2 – COPACABANA BIKING TRIP
Today´s ride will bring on a test of endurance, as we set off to explore Copacabana and Lake Titicaca in a unique and adventurous way.
We begin our day early, at 6 am, with a pick-up from the hotel. From here we will head up to the bustling city of El Alto, at 4,200m where we will begin our ride out to Copacabana, a beautiful Bolivian town known for its quaint atmosphere and its amazing views of Lake Titicaca, located at more than 3,800 meters above sea level. The ride is not for the faint of heart, as it requires strength as much as perseverance. At one point you will also have to board one of Bolivia´s famous wooden barges onto which cars, trucks and even buses are loaded to be ferried across the Strait of Tiquina.
But don´t worry — the support vehicle will follow closely behind.
After a few snacks and about 5 hours of riding, you will be rewarded with an impressive sight: Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, with a surface elevation of 3,812m.
Upon arrival, we will enjoy a traditional lakeside lunch of trout, prepared any way you like it, and a beer, as we take in the lake’s sanctity and relish on the accomplishment of having made it this far.
After lunch, we will have some time to explore Copacabana and pay a visit to the Virgin of Copacabana at her church, which is by far the most important Catholic sanctuary in Bolivia. At 6 pm we load onto the Titicaca catamaran for an amazing dinner and a ride to La Isla del Sol.
We will then check into Hotel Inti Kala for the night, strategically located right in the middle of the island.
Day 3 – COPACABANA BIKING TRIP PART II
Today we will enjoy a great breakfast, then head out to explore a bit of the Isla del Sol, where there are more than 80 ruins dating back to the Inca period circa the 15th century AD. Here we will enjoy the scenery of the island surrounded by Lake Titicaca and its deep blue water, with the distant snow peaks of the Illampu, Condoriri, Huayna Potosi and Illimani. We will visit the island’s agricultural terraces, which have adapted agriculture to the island’s steep and rocky terrain, and ruins such as the Sacred Rock, a labyrinth-like building called Chinkana, Kasa Pata, and Pilco Kaima.
We will head back to Copacabana midmorning and continue on with our bike tour of the area.
After a late lunch, we drive out to our accommodation for the night, a homestay with a local family, where we will learn a bit about the local culture from the residents of the villages surrounding Lake Titicaca. Here and with them is where we will spend the night.
